Oils / Acrylics

At first glance perhaps an unlikely subject, sunlight and shadow across the back of buildings, informal vagaries of backyards, washing lines, etc.  A well ordered composition leads our eye around the picture from the strongly contrasted focal point.  The picture shows an understanding of the principles of aerial perspective.  Strong colours in the foreground trees, cooling and lightening in tone as they recede to the background.  Cool greens balanced by warm orange of the buildings.
#144 Elise Hurst "Afternoon Light Princes Hill"
Commended: #332 Gregory R Smith“A Collection Well Noted”

Watercolours

This painting has a breadth and simplicity – most economical clear washes with a minimum of marks to convey considerable complexity. Lilac, yellows and greys are the colour ensemble
#321 Julie Simmons "The Bridge Hotel"
Highly Commended #204 Jan Long"Echidna"

Pastels

Here is a masterly pastel work in the time-honoured classical tradition.  An anatomical study in the tonal tradition – illusionistic rendering of light on objects and space.

Drawing

A bold coloured pencil drawing of an outcrop of weathered granite.  Drawings come in many forms.  This piece shows a miniaturistic attention to fine detail – a modulated blue orange colour scheme pervades and an obvious labour has been revealed as effortless.

Oils / Acrylics

This lovely oil is traditional painting at it’s best. The diagonal composition draws the eye into this peaceful scene. Great attention has been paid to foreground, middle ground and distance with repeated colours completing a very beautiful piece.

Watercolours

This beautifully executed watercolour shows not only skill but also a quirky sense of mischief. One can feel the atmosphere through the intense blue of the sky but the oversize pegs are the stars of this work. It’s all in the title!

Pastels

I couldn’t fault this excellent pastel. Depicting the figure or portrait (and this is both) is so exacting it has to be right but there is more. Composition and the technique plays a huge part in the end result.

Drawing

The use of the space is what attracted me to this superb drawing. By allowing the bird to be free, not bound by edges but emphasising the strengths in the main parts of the composition. This is a sure winner.
